Free workshop offered at Mall of New Hampshire BEDFORD, NH – Girls in kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to try their hand a whittling – an ancient art that teaches knife skills while creating useful and creative pieces. Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains will host the event at the Girl Scout Discovery Zone at the Mall of New Hampshire on Wednesday, Dec. 16, from 4 to 5 p.m. The session is free, but signups are encouraged at https://bit.ly/gswhittle “Whittling is a great outdoor skill that Girl Scouts of all ages have a chance to learn at camp, through programs with the outdoor programs staff and with their troops,” said Jazmin Averbuck, Outdoor Program Coordinator and Resident Camp Director for the council serving Girl Scouts in New Hampshire and Vermont.
Through whittling, girls learn how to use the jackknife as a tool to help produce dry tinder for fire starting when wood is wet, creating tools for camping use such as a spoon to eat with, and artistic sculpture. Many find the movements and patterns enjoyable and a way to reduce stress. At the event, girls will learn jackknife safety and simple cuts, and will whittle their own wooden fish or owls. Getting girls outdoors is a high priority for Girl Scouts. The council offers not only workshops like this one, but also day and resident camps, and maintains a lending library of outdoor equipment that includes jackknives and other outdoor items like compasses, GPS units, cooking kits, and more for Girl Scouts. Girls will also have a chance to learn what Girl Scouting has to offer.
