Contoocook Creamery, known for its fresh, 100% NH milk bottled in iconic glass bottles, is scrambling to change their packaging to include milk in plastic jugs. Although the farm would prefer to rely completely on reusable glass bottles, the change is being driven by market forces as their largest retail partner is no longer able to handle bottle returns, particularly given the Covid 19 challenges they are facing. The change was not anticipated by the Robertsons who own and operate Bohanan Farm and Contoocook Creamery. An immediate re-tooling of their custom bottling line was undertaken. The creamery is now able to process and fill both traditional glass bottles and standard half gallon and quart plastic jugs with labels.
When queried about the challenge of both the current pandemic and the need to immediately shift packaging, Jamie noted that the farm has a long history and has always adapted to adversity. Pointing out the water mark that’s 5 feet high on his farmhouse dining room wall from the flood of 1936. “The farm’s made it through the Spanish Flu of 1918, the flood of 1936, the hurricane of 1938, two World Wars, we’ll make it through this challenge as well” said Robertson. The plastic bottle rollout is immediate, look for the Contoocook Creamery labels in grocery stores on Monday. Glass bottles will still be available at the farm store and other markets around the state. If you don’t see Contoocook Creamery at your local grocery store ask for it by name!
